RE: Chinese Tire Story

FastEagle,
A thoughtful post, thank you. Now we need some balance.
Perhaps the hundreds of careful RV-ers who dutifully check every aspect of their rigs (including tire pressure, etc.) before they get underway and who still have had tire failures, can pipe-in on this dialog.

RE: How long will my battery last

If you left it plugged into the truck, you would then be working off of three batteries. In theory this *should* work with enough juice to start the truck in the morning.

RE: Is a 40 ft. fifth wheel to long for most campgrounds?

Don't come out to the west cost. Most state and fed. campgrounds are too small. We find problems with our 38' all the time. Good luck.
Here is an email I just got back from the California State Parks regarding length:

Web page me with one rigged out for camping that has a pin weight less than 2200# and is not home made and I'll retract all of this.

Too long for state or federal campgounds. Also, too heavy for your 250 to pull safely.

RE: New 5er tires.(observation).

Maxxis are not Chinese.
I phoned and talked with Maxxis about this and they report that "some" of their tires are made in China.
I sent an email to Denman Tires and this is what they wrote:

I think I will go with this brand.

RE: 5er gets hammered on highways

I would suspect an out-of-balance tire. Might be worth having a dynamic balance check to see if or how much it bounces before any correction.
Ron
My vote is here also, for a first-thing-to-check.

RE: Deposits in Water Heater

CTD,
The gelatin-looking substance may be the protein coat that some algae form over themselves as a protective barrier -- my guess anyway.
You will need a strong chorine solution to kill it off or a peroxide of some sort.

RE: winter driving with chains

Not at all. I have traveled extensively around this wonderful country of ours and the only place that insists on saying "the" is in Southern California.:S I personally find it grating on my intelligence to use the term "the" when referring to a highway number. It is a poor slang term perpetrated by the SoCal news media because they apparently are too lazy to call them by their real name. If they want to call it "the" valley freeway, or "the" foothills freeway, I have no problem with that. Our society has gotten really lazy and it shows by the poor grades our supposed "educated" citizens get when tested against the rest of the world. Maybe we need to start using "the" as a preface to everything we say:@ How about "the"RV.net, or "the"Costco.:h Or how about this, We are going to "the" California for vacation? NOT!
You need a coke and a smile -- or some scotch REAL FAST!! Deep breath in; deep breath out.

RE: What do I need to plead for different tires?

Skip said: " Since you have nearly new tires now would be the time to trade them for some good Maxxis (since Marathons are now all made in China) Good luck / Skip
This is from a Maxxi web site: "Maxxis 6th on Interbrand’s List of Taiwan’s Top 20 Global Brands
10/01/2008
For the sixth straight year, Maxxis has been ranked among Taiwan’s top global brands. Maxxis is sixth on the 2008 list, and is the only tire manufacturer to make the prestigious ranking."
OH well - most folks don't take time to check facts do thery. So what else is new?
So, who's first?

RE: Rippling Roof

I have never seen the EPDM layed down, but I suspect that they use an adhesive between it and the plywood. If this is true, then the ripples you see might be a sign that the EPDM is separating from the plywood. I would take it in and have it checked.

RE: Switch it up,,,good exp. with Chinese Tires

Buy American. Save an Americans job!!!!!
There are NO American manufacturers of any major tire brand for ST rated tires. Makes too many sparks towing down the road with NO TIRES :)
On a more serious note I refuse to use tires made by folks who are trying to kill our pets or our children. I use Maxxis which are made in Thailand.
Actually, Maxxis is a Taiwanese company that makes really good tires.
My Maxxis ST tires are definitley made in Thailand as skipnchar said. Maxxis makes other types of tires in Taiwan, I think they are ATV tires or bicycle tires.
"Tiawan" "Thialand" are not the same place!!

RE: Extended Warranties

Otherwise put the bucks in the bank and use it to pay for your repairs.
Yes, put $50/month in a separate savings account and call it "emergency repair funds". That way you keep your hard-earned money and use it (with interest) when you need it.

RE: Rubber Roof Cleaning

I wash the RV roof same as my house, I wait for rain. No scrubbing needed.
I am not sure what the obsession is for a perfectly white shiny roof.
I must admit I subscribe to this same cleaning service; easy and no cost.
